If fate shuts the door, go through the window.

Sometimes I just want to tease my hair and wear mesh cut-outs all day.

“I see myself as a huge fiery comet, a shooting star. Everyone stops, points up and gasps ‘Oh look at that!’ Then — whoosh, and I’m gone… and they’ll never see anything like it ever again, and they won’t be able to forget me — ever.” – J. Morrison

I’ve Always Been a Dreamer

Florals + Denim + Combat boots = My dream combo.

I realize this look is not groundbreaking, so I went ahead and did some accessorizing.  I’m still loving tiered ruffles and going for another layered look, decided to throw on this UO bandeau over my new Free People dress/tunic.

Thank you to the fabulous ladies behind two of my daily reads —  Oh So Hip It Hurts for tagging me and Fashionista for giving me an award.

Here are my ten random facts…

1.  I’m most inspired by the trends from the 60’s and 80’s.

2.  I can’t whistle and fake snap my fingers.

3.  I only wear skinny jeans but wish I could pull off the wide leg pants look.

4.  I played the piano for four years… mainly a mix of Celine Dion and country songs.  Yes, I like old school Celine songs.

5.  I’ve pushed myself physically when I completed the Los Angeles Marathon without training (note: I don’t recommend this.) and stayed awake while standing for 24 straight hours for charity.

6.  In high school I was a coxswain for the crew team.  I got to yell at boys and steer a boat.  Good times.

7.  I prefer the grunge and shaggy look over clean-cut in guys.

8.  I had a scar on my face for 13 years, courtesy of Mel.  We used to fight A LOT when we were young.

9.  I am a huge men’s college basketball fan.  This stems from when my school won the NCAA Championship.  Best day ever.

10.  I have 8 piercings… 7 in my ears.

Admittedly, I get bored easily and decided that I was over the last blog template.  This layout feels a bit more open and easier to read.  Hope you all like it!

Feeling Lacey

So I just learned that lacey means cheerful in Greek.  Well, on the cusp of 3.5 days of freedom (today’s a half work-day) in celebration of our country’s freedom, I am in a great mood!

Thanks so much for your kind comments, esp. the ones about my hair!  To answer some questions, yes, I get my hair dyed professionally and tell my hairdresser to dye it a rich chocolate brown.  Through the years, I’ve put my naturally black hair through the ringer:

Perms from 4th – 8th grade –> Highlights from 8th grade – freshman year of high school –> Dyed hair back to natural black sophomore year of high school –> Started up highlights again junior year of high school – junior year of college –> Dyed hair back to natural black color senior year of college –> Started highlighting hair yet again, including a stint with blondish highlights after college – circa 2006 –> Dyed hair back to natural black 2006 – 2007 –> Eased back into coloring hair all one brown color (done with highlights) 2007 – PRESENT.  I know, it’s amazing I still have hair!

Hope you all have a fun long weekend and enjoy the Independence Day sales!

There’s No Place Like Home

I’m back from my trip home to the Garden State and am already missing the east coast.  I had an amazing time celebrating my birthday and going to my friend’s wedding in Maryland.  And despite the downpour of rain, I made it to Topshop in NYC!

When I first walked into Topshop, I was slightly overwhelmed, but in a good way.  To see things up-close that you’ve admired online for so long was great!  I spent a good hour in the three-level store and was glad to see that they keep the floor pretty well stocked in all available sizes.  Although I took an armful of clothes into the fitting room, I only ended up buying a denim dress (pictured below).  Nonetheless, I was excited to see the zero sales tax on my NYC receipt.  Screw you 9.25% sales tax in Los Angeles!

My fraternal twin, Melly, and I celebrated our birthdays in Atlantic City.  I’m wearing my Nasty Gal vintage 80’s dress with the Jeffrey Campbell Mel shoes, and Melly’s wearing a Topshop dress.  I didn’t get any full-length shots with my shoes, but when we were in the club, a bouncer came up to me (who I thought was going to tell me to stand away from the roped off section), and let me know that at least six people had been admiring my shoes.  HA!

The real reason I went back east was to go to my friend’s wedding in Maryland.  Doesn’t she look gorgeous?! Love her dress, esp. the strapless outline at top.  I wore my Topshop dress, UO necklace and Jeffrey Campbell Mel shoes.

Thanks for all the sweet birthday wishes in my last post!  I promise to get back to everyone’s comments and look forward to catching up on all your blogs!

Party on the Side

Here’s my semi-scandalous Topshop cut-out dress.  Again, I never expose much skin unless I’m wearing a mini-skirt, so this is foreign territory for me.  I decided to go the more casual route by throwing on my vintage Justin Roper boots.  I so plan on getting another pair when I go back to the flea market.  To balance out the side exposure and cover myself up a little, I threw on my recently acquired Free People fishnet sleeves.

Lately, I’ve been doing some soul-searching and have pretty much overplayed “All the Above” by Maino ft. T-Pain this weekend.  It’s kind of my life anthem right now.  Hope you all enjoyed your two days of freedom!  I saw “The Hangover” and it was freakin’ hillarious.  I like dumb/raunchy comedies, and this was definitely the funniest movie I’ve seen since “I Love You, Man.”  Plus, Bradley Cooper has such pretty hair in the movie.

Lusting After…

When do I NOT want something from Topshop?  Out of these choice items, my favs are the stud denim jacket and multi-metal strand belt.

Besides Topshop, my second favorite online shopping destination is Oak NYC.  If I won the lotto tomorrow, I’d snatch up the Gar-De Dolly Jacket, Horace leather cropped biker pants, Alexander Wang Brenda Bag and Surface to Air three finger ring.

Via Farfetch, I’m digging the pleating and overall shape of this Tsumori Chisato Chambray Dress and these Alberto Fasciani Canvas and Leather Boots.

Getting back to reality and with what’s more in line with my budget, I like this Danny & Ozzy Split Tote and Silence & Noise twill drapey vest via Urban Outfitters.

Take My Breath Away

Blown away when I did a search on Etsy for ‘origami dresses/skirts’ and found Sarahseven’s collection on Etsy.  The draping, pleats, sweetheart necklines, ruffles and just overall architectural beauty of these dresses are stunning.  Everything is custom order, and the pieces are constructed off a recycled bustier.  The second dress from the top would be my kind of wedding gown.
