It’s not Monday, it’s Menday: Faux Fur

Starting today, I’ll be injecting some testosterone into this blog.  From women’s fashion trends to street style photos, I’ve asked several of my favorite men’s style bloggers to sound off on this weekly ‘panel’ to see if they are on board with what us ladies find popular/attractive/amazing.

Get to know the men below, and click on each box to visit their blogs.

For the innaugural Menday, I’ve decided to focus on the faux fur trend.  The majority of us, myself included, love faux fur.  But are men down with this cozy trend as well?

Kenyatte:  First of all…can we just pass a general fashion rule that the combined weight of a women’s jacket and bag may not be more than her body weight (Mary Kate…WTF!?!)

That said, I am not a huge fan of this trend…not because I have anything against fur (or faux fur) but because when a women wears something like this, the fur piece tends to completely overshadow the women underneath.  With the exception of Victoria (who is wearing a piece that allows the eye to trail down to her stunning leather leggings) the other women look like caricatures.

——————————

Lawrence:  Normally I would use this platform to bitch about how attractive women act like they get a free pass when it comes to wearing ridiculous stuff.  But, to be quite honest, I can’t find too much fault in this faux fur gear (though it does help to be beautiful).  Too bad I can’t say the same thing about some of these shoes.  Goddamn.

——————————

Shaun:  Animals have (previously I wrote “wear”, but they don’t have a choice really) fur to keep themselves at a level temperature.  Humans wear fur because we don’t have it, well everyone except Robin Williams.  But faux fur?  And faux fur worn in such a way that it won’t keep you warm?  Is there any utilitarian purpose to their style?  Must I say more?  (I will admit though Mary Kate [or is that Ashley?]…either way she looks good.)

——————————

Will:  If it serves a purpose other than making you look part-animal, go for it. MKO looks downright frigid and could use all the layers she can get. Furthermore, I think the real question regarding Ms. Wasson is the shoes.

——————————

Paul:  I don’t necessarily have a problem with faux fur (I guess the less animals you kill for the sake of fashion, the better), but I think the faux fur prize definitely has to go to Victoria here.  She applies it well, going with a well-proportioned, sexy and classy look, and I applaud her effort in representing the fashionable ladies across the pond.  Besides, Mrs. Becks is the less annoying of the four, so I think I’d still side with her if only on principle alone.

——————————

Nick:  Faux? Great, now how is PETA going to know who to throw red paint on?  As if girls weren’t cuddly enough, you gotta go and dress ’em up like teddy bears.  I’m a fan, for sure.  I’d make this trend mix tapes and throw rocks at its window at 2am.

——————————

Max:  About the faux fur look, I’d hate to upset any members of PETA, but if you’re going to wear fur, wear fur.  Forget the faux.  In general, I don’t advocate wearing fur.  I wouldn’t suggest actively seeking it out, but if by some means it is acquired, wear it when it’s cold.  In the case of fur, function should rule over fashion.  Yes, I’m talking to you LA.  There is a time and a season to wear fur, and it is called winter.

——————————

Dan:  Personally, I’m not a fan of the faux fur trend, mainly because I don’t like when women (or men for that matter) dress gaudy or in a manner that screams “I am better or richer than you.”  To me, it looks uptight and “uppity.” While these are clearly all beautiful women, I would say Erin Wasson wore it best because she’s pulling it off most subtly and down-to-earth-looking (or perhaps because she’s the only one not wearing those ridiculous oversized insect-looking glasses). – SB

——————————

Agree with the guys?  Yes, I will still continue to wear my faux fur… even in LA when the temps drop to a brisk 50 degrees (cough, Max).  Have an idea for what you want the guys to sound off on next week?  Please let me know in the comments box.

Hope you enjoyed this first post as much as I enjoyed putting it all together.

xo, Becs

its really interesting to get a male perspective, Nick made me lol
I don’t think i would go out and buy a faux fur coat, i’m not sayin i would never do it but i just think i’d look silly.
Seeing as a few of the guys have voiced their opinions on the shoes already, i would be interested to hear them discuss shoes, like the ashish for topshop and various other ‘odd’ shoes 🙂

I’d just like to point out that I came up with the name of this feature. 🙂 I love Kenyatte’s dressing philosophy! Interesting thoughts here. I myself have 2 faux fur jackets and a vintage stole, along with a leather jacket that happens to have rabbit fur on the majority of it so I like the trend. I like to be warm and it does have a luxe vibe to me. I also like when people pet me. Not really, but it happens. Other trends the guys could comment on are clogs (as I am torn and am wavering toward getting them as they’ve made quite a comeback), jeggings- ugh, I hate that word, and feathers. Fabulous job on this!! xo, Mel

Interesting what men have to say. And I guess this goes to reinforce the idea that women dress for other women. Men really like us in anything… or nothing 😉

I love Faux Fur AND I love Rachel Zoe!

Mmmh so About your personal stylish Confession I simply have to say that it would be a great Pleasure to see a “Becs with worn next to the bare skin faux-fur in the scorching Heat of LAaaaaaaaaaaaaa” illustration (“preventive Beads of sweat”) !!!!

Love the new feature and am looking forward to reading it regularly! I personally love faux-fur, but it’s interesting to see the trend from a different perspective.

  10. January 11, 2010 at 1:54 pm

Sorry Becks, I’m not a faux fur fan BUT I do LOVE the new Menday feature. I would love to hear the guys opinion on ballet flats. 🙂

  11. January 11, 2010 at 2:31 pm

Lol…Becs!! You just made my Monday so much better!! I love to read guy’s opinions on what we wear and I was just going to ask about ballet flats but the lady above me already did. I think I’m very curious what they think about when we wear clothings that are a little too short or tight? I mean, besides the obvious thing on their mind of course! Can’t wait for the next one! xoxoxoxoxoxo

This is such a cool entry! 🙂 This is a fun way to start a Monday. It would be nice to know what the men are thinking about stuff we love and adore and talk to girlfriends about. On faux fur, I don’t think I’ll ever come around to wearing it. It’s just not me.

  14. January 12, 2010 at 8:56 am

becs, what a delightful idea! we of course care about what the fashionistos think about what we wear. love the manday idea, and their inputs are quite interesting!

  21. January 13, 2010 at 12:54 am

I’m loving the testosterone fix! I kinda agree. Fur’s not usually my thang.

Great post Becs, it’s a really good idea! And it is good to know what boys really think about trends. I can see from my boyfriend that, most of the times, we don’t really share the same idea about what looks cool on a girl like, for instance Kenyatte said: “can we just pass a general fashion rule that the combined weight of a women’s jacket and bag may not be more than her body weight”. He would toooootally agree! 😉

    xoxo

  23. January 13, 2010 at 6:23 am

Love faux fur and love your post. Though I have to say, I was surprised that so many of the guys liked the faux fur trend!
I really just adore Victoria’s look too. I’ll take her bolero, her chanel bag and her amazing legs, please. Thanks.
And BTW Paul, you’re so on point! Completely proportioned. 😉

gotta love a girl who knows how to work proportions haha, in my opinion it shows that her style sense is on a higher level. Glad to hear that you agree! Dope website btw, def. dig the design, very classic.

  24. January 13, 2010 at 11:37 am

this is such a good idea for a post! i love it. totally different than what you see on most blogs.

  25. January 13, 2010 at 1:53 pm

LOL… first let me say this is a genius idea.. i love guys opinions and then instantly dismissing them .

i dont care what men think but its fun .. i love faux fur and think that all those ladies look great

  26. January 13, 2010 at 4:46 pm

Oh, I absolutely adore this idea. It’s so rare to see male bloggers; let alone male bloggers who are willing to share their thoughts on fashion. Love this!! 🙂

  27. January 13, 2010 at 8:38 pm

What a great segment! I love hearing from fashionable guys’ perspectives. I’ll still wear my faux fur and it sounds like most of the guys don’t like it because it can come off as gaudy – but not always!

  28. January 13, 2010 at 9:59 pm

great post. it is good seeing this from a guy’s pt of view.

  29. January 14, 2010 at 12:07 am

What an interesting post! Such a clever idea. I love hearing a males opionion!

  30. January 14, 2010 at 12:26 am

Becs – Totally love this. I do agree that Faux Fur can totally swallow the body and sometimes I have a problem with that, thats why I try to find pieces that still compliment and have more of a fit. I cant get rid of my faux fur!

I love getting a guy’s perspective on fashion. It’s nice to hear that not all guys are against faux fur. Personally I love faux fur, and love wearing faux fur vests and some faux fur on my boots.

  32. January 19, 2010 at 11:35 pm

OMG becs this is sooo funny! the other week I bought a faux fur vest and my BF hated it! i, on the other hand, find it fabulous! looove this post!

MKO & Erin…about as bad as it gets. They are making Faux fur look BAD !
Rachel -Looks like she just left the set of “Dynasty” which IMHO is not a bad thing. I love some of the fashion from the 70 & 80’s (worn the right way of course). Extra points for the addition of the retro shades !
Victoria – aside from the “I need a sandwich or anything edible at all look”, her clothes and curves are the stuff that wet dreams are made of baby !!!! Imagine getting into an argument with your girl while she is wearing that…you could not stay mad because all the blood from your brain..whole top half would be bumrushing your nether regions !
Now to the subject at hand. I cannot have any problem with faux. I have two nice leather jackets (one from Korea) that have have a “faux” addition and they are SEX (word-UP).
Ladies, Just keep Victoria (and at the least Rachel) in mind and make sure that your piece compliments your existing look instead of damaging it (whew). Same can be said for everything fashionable.

Ken, you da MAN for sure !!!!
